The Team

Learn about the sustainability team and how to get in contact.

Our Sustainability Team sits within the Estates and Facilities Directorate. The team supports all areas of the University to better understand and implement environmental improvements. We work closely with staff, students and external stakeholders to share best practice, encourage behavioural change and collaborate on strategy. We are active members of the  and the  and actively contribute to the sustainable discussion, in addition to supporting events both inside, and outside of the Higher Education sector. Simon Goldsmith, Head of Strategic Sustainability

Simon has been with us at ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ since 2013. Simon is responsible for leading the delivery of sustainability, developing our strategy and policy including the Net Zero Plan, implementing a range projects, communication master planning and forming crucial bonds with our external partners. He is also the Chair of the London Higher Sustainability Network.

David has been with us at ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ since November 2019. He is responsible for the Environmental Management System (ISO 14001), in addition to a diverse project portfolio including aspects of ecosystem services, circular economy, engagement and data management. David's career started with four years at the Bat Conservation Trust, before moving into the wider world of sustainability, spending three years leading the delivery at an acute NHS Trust in Essex. In his spare time he can often be found painting, promoting the positive word of sustainability or exploring the natural surroundings of his local area!

Jemima joined the Sustainability Team in June 2024. They are responsible for delivering various projects under the Sustainability Action Plan. Namely, improving the university's recycling rate and embedding circular economy practices, as well as identifying and mitigating climate risk. Jemima's sustainability career started in the waste industry, engaging with residents to improve recycling rates in several inner London boroughs, before moving into the knowledge economy sector, ensuring development in King's Cross is sustainable and equitable. Outside of work, Jemima is a keen runner and you'll often find them running to campus, red-faced but very happy!

Yee has been at ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ since January 2023 and oversees engaging students and staff in sustainability. Yee works to achieve our net zero and circular economy ambitions by ensuring that our 20,000+ students and 1,800+ staff all take positive sustainability actions on campus in their studies, at home and in their careers.

Fariha has been part of the team since October 2023 and assists the sustainability team in delivering environmental and social sustainability projects at a strategic, operational and grassroots level to support value-driven change within the university. Having previously worked in the music industry to create sustainable awareness, her passions lie in aligning arts and culture to climate and social justice.

Daniela has been part of the team since September 2023 and assists the Sustainability Team across a number of different projects to gain a wide variety of key skills that are key for employability.  Her work is mostly focused on content creation and assisting with our sustainable campaigns in addition to leading our End of Term Reuse Project.

The Wider Estates Team

The wider estates team are also specifically tasked in the delivery of sustainability outcomes. These are involved in roles including strategy, project lead and management to reduce our environmental impacts.

Simon Earp, Travel & Green Transport  Manager

Simon has been with us for over 10 years, and he is responsible for delivering the Travel and Green Transport Plan.  This includes seeking to reduce the carbon footprint of our fleet and wider scope three travel related impacts and of the university.

Noel McSweeney, Building Services Manager

Noel is responsible for the development and implementation of the building services strategy across the Estate. This, ensures investments and decisions drive down our energy, carbon and water footprints. Noel liaises closely between university, our contractors and others to maintain progress against our goals.  He is a central figure in our decarbonisation and net zero to 2030 planning.

Facilities Management Contract Dept, Energy Manager (Vacant)

This role ensures we applying innovations and processes improvement that will maximise energy conservation across the university. This role is crucial to drive down our carbon emissions and assisting us to meet our Net Zero target. The role works with partners across the university utilising data to help us target efficiency programmes.

The Integrated Facilities Management Contract

The University is entered into an Integrated Facilities Management Contract, awarded to Sodexo.  Sodexo operate the facility services including Security, Porters, Cleaning, Maintenance and Grounds.  All staff are required to ensure sustainability expectations are met in their roles; with their insights and expertise, environmental benefits will be achieved in partnership with the University. A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Team was budgeted with the contract and those members can be found below.

Jui joined Sodexo in April 2024 and comes with 15 years’ experience in both private and public sectors in India, Southeast Asia, Africa, & Europe. She worked on a wide range of Social Impact and Sustainability projects, including Agri-Insurance and Technology solution for World Bank Group, Water and Energy for Food Production for USAID and Positive Impact Financing Models. Apart from her existing role at Sodexo, Jui is also a Business Advisor to Khadi London and GVK on Regenerative Agriculture and Sustainable Fashion. She is a mentor for London School of Economics MSc. Social Entrepreneurship and Innovation department and a visiting faculty teaching CSR and Sustainability at multiple Universities, she is also a Trustee for a homeless shelter, Crawley Friends Housing Association in UK.

Shraddha is the Sustainability Manager at Sodexo and has been working with the University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ since November 2021 to deliver the sustainability objectives across Sodexo’s services and support the university in achieving their targets. Previously, she was Travel Plan Coordinator at Sodexo and was working with GSK, encouraging staff to commute sustainably. In her spare time, she likes travelling, baking and watching films and tennis.

Zoé joined Sodexo in October 2023, after completing a master’s in marketing Strategy and Innovation at Bayes Business School in London. Her role is to drive Sodexo's Social Impact strategy, improve customer experience, and support the University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ in enhancing the student experience and engagement. With a Bachelor's degree in International Business and living in Asia and the Middle East for over 10 years, Zoé brings a diverse international perspective. Fluent in French and English, and conversant in Spanish and Chinese, she leverages her multicultural background to create events and programs that resonate with students, having recently experienced studying abroad.

My role is focused on improving our BMS system that is reducing our energy consumption helping us deliver our carbon reduction commitments. The role delivers savings in electricity, gas and water and works closely with ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ and Sodexo teams on ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ campuses identifying improvements to help us achieve net zero and wider sustainability KPIs.

I am part of the Sustainability and CSR team in Sodexo working on the ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ IFM contract. I work closely with this team working on key sustainability issues relating to the contract. This includes circular economy approaches including reviewing green waste management.

In my role I have responsibilities for key issues relating to waste management and recycling, including working with clearing teams to audit improvement systems plus other sustainability focused projects within the team.

The Students Union

The GSU shares our passion in wanting to minimise impacts on the planet and across all activities.


The ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ Students' Union (GSU) and Sustainability Team collaborate closely on a number of initiatives, with elected GSU Officers often having sustainability at the heart of their manifestos.  More information about the GSU's sustainability improvements can be found on their .

Partnerships

Our partnerships connect us with the wider community, to enable collaboration, share knowledge, and make progress on local and global sustainability goals. Whether it is an outreach opportunity, project collaboration or learning relationship, we want to hear from you.  There are plenty of opportunities to work our staff and students to develop new initiatives to deliver a better future for all.

We have forged a number of partnerships over the years to drive forwards the sustainable agenda.  These include:

  • - delivered by Jump to encourage positive actions in students and staff.
  • - initiated in 2011, this campaign partners with local charities and encourages students to donate unwanted items at the end of the year.  Over the past four years our partnered charity if the British Heart Foundation.
  • - joining in 2020, this initiative partners with Green Impact and British Hedgehog Preservation Society to encourage hedgehogs to campus and help reduce their national population declines.
  • Food & Catering -  partnering with our catering suppliers, we together strive to reduce environmental impacts and bring about positive behavioural change and choices.
