Dr Yemi Onilude BSc Hons, PGDipHE, MSc, EdD

Senior Lecturer in Midwifery

Yemi joined the university in February 2014 as a Senior Lecturer in Midwifery. Prior to joining the university in 2012, she was a hospital and community midwife in the NHS; mentoring, supervising and assessing pre-registration midwifery students at different levels of their programme. She also supervised newly qualified midwives towards completion of their preceptorship programmes.

Yemi completed her MSc in Public Health at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, University of London in 2006 and a PGDip Higher Education, University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ in 2012.

She has recently completed her Doctor of Education programme (EdD) in September 2023 and her research is a mixed methods study of pre-registration midwifery perinatal mental health education and the preparedness of newly qualified midwives for post-registration practice.

Yemi has contributed to student success and has had a positive impact on her workplace in many ways which is reflected in her nominations, shortlisting and awards.

Her Student Led Teaching Awards (SLTAs) as winners include: the Accessible Education Award for Faculty of Education, Health and Human Sciences (FEHHS) in 2022, the Inspirational Teaching Award for FEHHS in 2021, and the Extra Mile Award for FEHHS in 2016. For the Faculty staff award, Yemi has also been awarded a winner for the most outstanding contribution to student experience in 2017. She has also won the British Journal of Midwifery, London award along with three other midwifery lecturers for Contribution to Midwifery Education and the Clinical Practice Education for a London South East NHS Partner Trust. She has been shortlisted for the following SLTAs awards, Equity Champion Award (2022) and Outstanding Personal Tutor Award (2016).

Yemi has other nominations for other staff awards including the ‘Making a Difference Award’ in 2023 and the ‘Positive Impact Award’ in 2022. Yemi prefers to address her midwifery students as future midwives, seeing them as future ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ graduates, colleagues and leaders with great potential to change their world.

Responsibilities within the university

  • Module leader for BSc Midwifery programme and midwifery degree apprenticeship at Level 6
  • Joint Module Leader for Psychosocial perspectives on health for nursing and midwifery students at level 4
  • Teaching and assessment responsibilities are for all branches of nursing, midwifery, and paramedic science programmes at levels 4-6 and 7
  • Project supervisor for BSc and MSc research at levels 6 and 7
  • Personal tutor from Jan 23, Jan 21, Sept 19, March 17, Sept 15, and March 14 midwifery cohorts
  • Linking with partner NHS Trusts: Currently at LGT – QE site and previously was at Darent Valley Hospital for 5 years.
