Funding schemes

The Institute for Lifecourse Development (ILD) is pleased to announce the 2024/2025 ILD competitive funding opportunities. These funding streams are open to Staff, Early Career Academics (ECAs) and Post-Graduate Researchers (PGRs) within FEHHS.

ILD Competitive Funding:

The Staff, ECA and PGR Competitive Funding schemes are designed to support research and knowledge exchange activities including presentations at conferences (travel, accommodation and conference fees), equipment, research support (such as participant payments), fieldwork costs, and some publication costs.

ILD Staff International Research Collaboration Scheme:

The ILD Staff International Research Collaboration Scheme offers financial support for staff to spend one week overseas with an international research collaborator to produce a book chapter, peer reviewed journal article, grant bid or other specific output.  Only one application can be made by each applicant for this scheme during an academic year.

ILD PGR Research Collaboration Scheme:

The ILD PGR Research Collaboration scheme is for PGR students to spend up to two weeks with an external research collaborator overseas or at another institution in the UK to produce a book chapter, peer reviewed journal article, grant bid or other specific output. Only one application can be made by each applicant during the period of their doctoral studies.

Application Period:

The call for these funding schemes has been sent via email from ILD@greenwich.ac.uk in October 2024. Applications are open until 5pm on 1 June 2025, or until all available funds have been allocated. The funding call may close sooner if the budget threshold limit is reached.

Funding Limits:

  • For the ILD Competitive Funding schemes, staff can be funded for up to £4,000 per academic year in total, while PGR students can receive up to £1,000 per academic year in total.
  • This can be spread across several applications throughout the academic year.
  • Only one international trip can be taken within an academic year across the ILD Competitive Funding schemes.
  • Additional applications for overseas travel can be made within the same academic year via the ILD International Research Collaboration Scheme for staff, or the ILD PGR Research Collaboration Scheme for students. Applicants should check the specific eligibility criteria for those schemes carefully to ensure that they qualify.
  • For the ILD Research Collaboration Schemes, applicants may request funding to support research activities aimed at producing collaborative outputs with partner organisations. The amount you can apply for varies depending on whether you are a staff member or PGR student and where you are travelling to. Please see the application form for details.

Application Process:

  • All applications must be submitted using the Word-based forms provided. Each form requires authorising signatures, please check the requirements on the relevant application form and obtain all required signatures before sending your application to ILD@greenwich.ac.uk.
  • Applications must include quotes from one of the university’s approved travel providers and any other supporting evidence.
  • The ILD Funding Panel will review applications during their monthly leadership meetings, and applicants will be notified of the panel’s decision shortly thereafter.
  • All successful applicants must attend an ILD Centre meeting and provide an update about the associated research and knowledge exchange outcomes from the ILD funding. They will also be required to submit written report about this.
