Latest Techniques in Spreadability Testing and Layer Quality Control

Experts at the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology at the University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ in Kent, UK, have designed an instrument to quantify the behaviour of a powder when spreading for Additive Manufacturing. This incorporates a shadowgraphy technique, used to quantify powder bed surface roughness.

It can also be set up to determine powder bed relative packing fraction, the change in packing fraction, particle size and shape over the build plate, and to evaluate the electrostatic charges over the powder bed.

This instrument is available for powder materials testing, either through consultancy or Research programmes. For more information please contact us

For general AM related powder handling issues we can offer a series of tests such as

  1. Powder spreadability tests to characterise the surface geometry and powder bed of the material or
  2. Undertake standard powder characterisation tests.

These will then be presented in a report to interpret the data to offer a deeper understanding of key powder spreadability characteristics for the materials in use in additive manufacturing.
