Work on electrical systems, including equipment, must be carried out when the system is dead and in accordance with the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and BS 7671:2018 Requirements for Electrical Installations, IET Wiring Regulations – 18th Edition. Work on electrical systems must be carried out only by persons with adequate technical knowledge or experience, or supervision.
- Proposals for work on live electrical systems, whether for repair, maintenance or research, must be notified to the University Health & Safety Unit before work starts.
- An assessment of the risks and precautions to be taken must be drawn up by the project supervisor, in consultation with the University Health & Safety Unit and Faculty or Office.
- This assessment will include consideration of alternatives to working with live electrical systems, such as modification of research proposals or sending equipment off site for repair.
- Responsibility for the decision to work with live electrical systems rests with the Faculty Operating Officer or Director of Directorate.
