This master’s covers the key areas of finance and investment analysis, helps you prepare for professional qualifications and gives you the opportunity to undertake a placement.

This Finance and Investment programme is ideal for those with degrees in accounting, finance, business, economics, or quantitative subjects.

You will study financial markets and products, financial analysis and valuation, investment management, financial engineering and machine learning, before conducting a research project on data analysis of financial markets. Learn from academics with recent industry experience and gain access to experienced investment banking professionals and researchers.

This MSc helps you develop the skills for successful careers in the finance industry. It covers the techniques used for the analysis and management of investment and risk in the investment industry. The programme is affiliated with Chartered Financial Analyst Institute (CFA) under the CFA Institute University Affiliation Program, and it equips you with the theoretical and practical toolset to take Level 1 of the CFA qualification after you graduate. The programme is also affiliated with CFA Certificate of ESG Investing. The programme is also accredited with ACCA, CIMA and AIA professional body; which offer exemptions; including up to 4 ACCA papers, and up to CIMA Certificate Level.

This degree includes the opportunity to enhance your employability - and elevate your career - with a placement year, working full-time for a company. It’s a chance for you to immerse yourself in an industry, apply your knowledge and put theory into practice. It should also help you develop your professional skills and assist you in starting to make industry connections. Graduates with work experience are highly sought after by employers and often secure higher-level positions.

How you will learn

Teaching

In a typical week, learning takes place through a combination of lectures and seminars. You'll be able to discuss and develop your understanding of topics covered in lectures in smaller group sessions. Contact hours may fall between 9am and 9pm, depending on your elective courses and tutorials.

Independent learning

Outside of timetabled sessions, you'll need to dedicate time to self-study to prepare for coursework, presentations and exams. Our Stockwell Street library and online resources will support your further reading and research.

You can also join a range of student societies, including the .

Overall workload

Your overall workload consists of contact hours (lectures, seminars, etc), independent learning, and assessments. For full-time students, the workload should be roughly equivalent to a full-time job. For part-time students, this will reduce in proportion with the number of modules you are studying.

Students are assessed through:

  • Essays
  • Examinations
  • Dissertation
  • Lab-based exercises.

We aim to provide feedback on assignments and to release examination results within 15 working days.

Careers and placements

Will I have a work placement?

On this degree you will undertake, in your second year, a placement. The University will help as much as possible, before and during your placement, to ensure you make the most of this valuable experience but it is your responsibility to find - and secure - your placement. ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ Business School students have previously undertaken their placement with companies operating in a wide range of different sectors - retail and e-commerce, hospitality, media and advertising, events, and finance.

How long is my placement?

Work placements are a minimum of 40 weeks and a maximum of 46 weeks of full-time paid work.

What are the financial arrangements?

Placements are usually paid at competitive rates for entry level roles in your chosen industry. The University will promote paid opportunities to you.

What sort of careers do graduates pursue?

Graduates can pursue careers in investment and financial analysis such as investment management, corporate finance, financial management and consulting. Graduates who chose to undertake the CFA Institute's Chartered Financial Analyst status will be in great demand in many areas of business and finance.

Academic skills and study support

Access study skills support through your tutor, our subject librarians, and our online academic skills centre.

Where appropriate, we provide support in academic English and mathematics. If you need support to use particular IT packages for a specific module, we provide training for this.

Support from the department

As a Business School student you will be able to enter our Enterprise Challenge, which rewards student entrepreneurship and innovation. Previous winners have received significant prize money to develop their business ideas.

Join groups such as the and take part in student competitions like the UK Trading Challenge. Our team of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ students have repeatedly won this competition.

We hold Big Picture Seminars with senior executives from organisations including Northern Trust and Barclays are invited to pass on their insights and experience.
