Professor Mark O'Thomas is a Visiting Professor at the University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ. Prior to this he was formerly Pro Vice Chancellor of the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Sciences, Dean of Academic Affairs at Newcastle University, Head of the School of Fine & Performing Arts at the University of Lincoln and the founding Director of the Institute for Performing Arts at the University of East London. Mark also spent ten years at the BBC as a subtitler and channel director. He has worked as a playwright, translator and dramaturg for a number of theatres including Soho Theatre, The Royal Court Theatre and the Royal National Theatre, and has adapted a vast array of novels for the stage where his credits include Jorge Amado's Dona Flor and her Two Husbands and Fernando Pessoa's Book of Disquiet.

Research / Scholarly interests

Mark is Associate Editor of Revista Brasileira de Estudos da Presença - the Brazilian Journal on Presence Studies - and his main research interest lays at the interface between translation, adaptation and dramaturgy. His work in this area has crossed many disciplines including musicology, film, literary and translation studies but his main focus remains on performance writing.

Mark is currently working on editing a new collection of essays on the Netflix anthology series American Horror Story as well as co-editing (along with ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ colleagues Dr Harry Derbyshire and Dr Nicholas Holden) a special issue of the journal Comparative Drama.
