After initial qualification as a registered nurse, Alison successfully secured posts in various Emergency Departments in South East England. Her career progression in Emergency nursing culminated in the post of Practice Development Nurse from 1999 - 2004.
Alison joined the university in 2004 as a Senior Lecturer and was instrumental in developing and delivering various courses in the area of emergency care, leadership and management.
In 2007 Alison became Principal Lecturer and Programme Leader for pre-registration Adult Nursing. The role encompassed all aspects of the programme, including curriculum development and monitoring; recruitment and retention; reporting to internal and external bodies; providing academic and pastoral support to students and developing new ways of working within the university, and applying Nursing and Midwifery Council regulations. A key part of this role was liaising with practice partners to ensure that student placements remained contemporary, focused, and provided an excellent environment for student nurses to develop and refine their skills and knowledge.
In 2022 Alison secured the role of Lead for Practice Learning for Professional Programmes within the School of Health Sciences. This role includes working closely with external partners ensuring that the quality, scope, and delivery of clinical learning remains contemporary and relevant. She is responsible for oversight of practice placement concerns, quality assurance, evaluation, and audit within the school. Alison works with the PSRB and programme leads, as well as education leads in practice, to ensure that PSRB and programme requirements are met.
Alison lectures on a range of subjects, including leadership, change management and communication issues to pre and post-qualified health professionals such as nurses, midwives and paramedics.
She regularly reviews potential publications for the British Journal of Nursing and is widely published both as a single and joint author.

Research / Scholarly interests
Alison's research interests are around the acquisition and development of skills. Her original research for her MA investigated to what extent student nurses maintain the skill of taking manual blood pressures and reaffirmed the link between skill decay and time. Her notable publications delves into this and also change management, leadership and decision making for paramedics.
