Dr Karen Brickman
Head of School for Business, Operations and Strategy
Dr Brickman is the Head of School for Business, Operations and Strategy, along with being a Chartered Management Accountant CIMA. Her research focuses on the design of performance measurement and management control systems within the banking sector, with a particular interest in incentive design and risk management. She also researches in the field of Accounting Education. She co-authored chapters of textbooks on Performance Management and Control and Teaching Excellence. Dr Brickman’s research has been presented at international conferences and to practitioners and policy makers.
Dr Brickman has extensive financial services experience, particularly in the risk and regulation domain, and provides insights and experience from both an academic and corporate perspective. Dr Brickman lectures in the area of Strategic Financial Management and Management Accounting and Control. In both these areas she has run large undergraduate courses that are taught in the UK and internationally. At the post graduate level she lectures in Financial and Management Accounting and supervises Masters dissertations.
Dr Brickman is the lead tutor for the Business School’s international partnership with Oxford International. She is also the link tutor for the Business School's partnership with the MSA University in Egypt.
Dr Brickman sits on the Academic Research Board & Advisory Panel for the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants. She is also an External Examiner at the University of East Anglia and Manchester Metropolitan University.
Prior to joining the University of ÐÓ°ÉappÏÂÔØ, Dr Brickman worked for a top tier investment bank in London. Her main roles ranged from managing multi-million dollar IT projects and supervising teams responsible for the delivery of regulatory reporting requirements of UK and US regulators.
Dr Brickman graduated with a first class honours Business Degree in 2000, a Masters in Business Studies in 2002, and a PhD in 2017. Professionally, she was appointed Chartered Management Accountant in 2006, Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2012, and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2022.

Research / Scholarly interests
Dr Brickman’s main research interests are in two key areas; management accounting and pedagogy. In the field of management accounting, Karen's research focuses on the design of performance measurement and management control systems within the banking sector. Her particular interests include incentive design, risk management and ESG. In the area of pedagogy, she is interested in issues surrounding student engagement and retention and blended learning.
